The proof is in the palatschinken

How is it possible that there are similar words in such different languages as Austrian German, Slovak and Hungarian? Can vocabulary jump between three language families? Sure it can - after all, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary (and a host of other countries) were all under the same umbrella empire for many years. It seems that words for food are particularly similar. For example, the word for corn in Slovak is kukurica, in Hungarian it’s kukorica and in Eastern Austria they use Kukuruz rather than the German Mais. Another example is pancake. In Slovak it’s palacinka, in Hungarian palacsinta, and in Austrian-German Palatschinken. In German-German it’s Pfannkuchen. There are too many examples like these for them to be just coincidence — the proof is in the Palatschinken…
