The 38-year-old announced his plans to retire, after five months at Paris St Germain, which won the 2013 French championships. He leaves his mark with a career spanning eight championships at three European clubs - Manchester United (1993-2003), Real Madrid (2003-2007) and AC Milan (2009-2010), and as England captain (2000-2006), but also with a reputation as a 'spice boy', after his 1999 marriage to Victoria Beckham of Spice Girls fame. He's not the only retired spice boy out there though

Aitor Ocio, Spain, 36

Aitor Ocio is probably one of the most swag football players of recent years in Spain. The lad from the Basque country isn't just famous for his performance with FC Seville in two Uefa cups, or the Supercups in Spain and Europe - but in his provocative photo shoots off the pitch. He retired in summer 2012 (Image courtesy of © Aitor Ocio official facebook page)

David Ginola, France, 46

The Newcastle United player lost the ball in qualifications for the 1994 world cup against Bulgaria, saw his side eliminated, and his own career too. El Magnifico (as the Spaniards nicknamed him) returned to his modelling ways, starring in glossy adverts for the likes of Chaumet, Cerruti and L'Oreal, before entering the entertainment world as a voice actor on the French dubbed version of Finding Nemo in 2002 (the year he retired), and as a contestant on Dancing With The Stars in 2011 (Image: courtesy of © David Ginola official facebook page)

Radosław Majdan, Poland, 41

The former goalkeeper of Pogoń Szczecin, pronounced 'Radoswav Maydan', is the epitome of versatility in football. He is an author ('Pierwsza Połowa' aka 'First Half'), a rock group member (The Trash), a politician and a perfume model too. He retired in 2010 (Image: courtesy of © Radosław Majdan official facebook page)

Michael Ballack, Germany, 36

He saved his team as captain in the 2002 world cup against South Korea, and has been hailed for his leadership qualities ever since. He retired in October 2012 after almost a decade of football and some 98 international matches. He had quite the bad boy image as a footballer and had quite a few confrontations with the-then German coach, Joachim Löw. After a run of injuries and internal conflicts, he threw in the sponge (Image: courtesy of © Michael Ballack facebook page)

Fredrik Ljungberg, Sweden, 36

The former captain of the Swedish national side brought British club Arsenal FC (1998-2007) glory twice as English champions, before retiring in autumn 2012. With honorary titles such as 'one of the 100 most sexiest men' (not unusual considering he was a Calvin Klein model) and 'best dressed Swede', it seems that between Beckham, Ginola and Freddy, the perfect footballer has also been the perfect man (Image: courtesy of © Fredrik Ljungberg Calvin Klein official facebook page)
