CultureBehind the Numbers

Happy 'Back To The Future' day! Today's the day that Marty McFly arrives in a land of flying cars, hoverboards and self-lacing shoes. Behind the numbers takes a look back at the Back To The Future franchise.

This week, behind the numbers has broken with tradition and instead opted to showcase a date, because today is 21 October 2015: the day that Marty McFly (Michael J Fox), the cap-wearing hero of the Back To The Future franchise, arrives in the future in a time-travelling DeLorean.

Okay, so I have to admit I may have a slight gap in my cinematic history knowledge when it comes to this film,  but in my defence, in 1989 I could still count myself in the Valley of the Clueless). However the fact remains that Marty Mcfly and his cult catchphrase 'Nobody calls me chicken', are ranked 39th in Empire magazine's classification of the best film characters of all time, behind Donnie Darko and in front of Patrick Bateman (American Psycho).

I have the impression that everyone around me is taking today a little more seriously, if my Facebook wall is anything to go by, with endless posts of 'is today the day Marty McFly arrives when he travels to the future?' This is reason enough for me to go and see the films to make up for it, being shown at cinemas across Europe today in honour of the occaision. It's marked on the calendar for me today under 'philistine'.
