A week of French film

The eighth edition of French Film Week (June 27-July 3) is about to get underway in the German capital.
This year’s opening film is Jan Kounen’s mass-appeal comedy 99 Francs (German title: 39,90) which looks at the world of advertising. The feature will be presented to Berlin cinemagoers by Frédéric Beigbeder, the writer of the eponymous best-selling book.
The line-up includes a varied panorama of 15 recent French films which will screen in two theatres: Cinéma Paris and Filmtheater am Friedrichshain. Among the selected titles are Christophe Honoré’s Love Songs, Cédric Klapisch’s Paris, Abdellatif Kechiche’s The Secret of the Grain, Jacques Doillon’s Just Anybody, Olivier Jean-Marie’s Go West: A Lucky Luke Adventure (with voiceovers by Lambert Wilson and Clovis Cornillac), and Her Name Is Sabine (a highly personal documentary by actress Sandrine Bonnaire who makes her directorial debut in this exploration of the life of her autistic sister).
One of the event’s main attractions is the 2008 Cannes Palme d'Or prize winner The Class by Laurent Cantet, which will be shown at the end of the festival.
This year’s closing film is Céline Sciamma’s debut feature Water Lilies.
