Romania is to change from having a government of liberal-thinking MPs to a large sui generis coalition in order to deal with the crisis. Liberals, conservatives, and socialists will have to unite their efforts, adapting to the demands of rural areas which are asking for increased government help. ‘The government is not the problem but the solution now,' proclaimed Martin Schulz, leader of the socialist group in the European parliament, when we met at the PES council platform in Madrid.
Convinced that socialism is 'currently the most modern form of politics,' Schulz explained that due to socialist achievements like those made in Romania, it would be possible to win the 2009 European elections in June. 'Even more so if, as I imagine, the Tories in the UK and the conservatives in the Czech Republic leave the European people’s party and found a new party on their own,' he concluded.
