The Poetry Round

Sophia Walker is a slam poet and teaching artist originally from the US. We came across the BBC Scottish slam champion at the Edinburgh book festival's impro slam, which she deservedly won. Check her out performing 'Two-faced love' here. cafebabel.com: What do you want to be when you grow up? Sophia Walker: A flying ninja

cafebabel.com: What poem would you take to a desert island?

Sophia Walker: Buddy Wakefield’s 'Convenience stores' or Danez Smith’s 'Mrs Thompson'

cafebabel.com: If you ran away, where would you run away to?

Sophia Walker: 15 feet (5 metres - ed) behind me. I don’t run very far and I like the view

cafebabel.com: Do you have a favourite line or fragment of poetry?

Sophia Walker: Can I have two?

cafebabel.com: Only because you asked nicely...

Sophia Walker: ‘I’m so desperate for beauty, I’ll turn scaffolding to mountains.’ (Kate Tempest’s ‘Endtime’)

'Learn to count up to ten Bensons, hide behind hedges burning pubescent tensions.' (Disraeli)

cafebabel.com: What’s the most interesting interview question you’ve ever been asked?

Sophia Walker: Perhaps, how did you feel about being arrested? Did you feel your freedom of speech was being violated?

cafebabel.com: ?!

Sophia Walker: I recited a poem in Vietnam and there were two undercover cops. I was mainly just pissed off that they misinterpreted the poem.

Someone once asked me, if you were an erotic balloon, what sort of erotic balloon would you be? I didn’t even know there was such a thing as erotic balloons.

cafebabel.com: Suggest a question for next time.

Sophia Walker: What’s the most interesting thing you’ve ever done on a Thursday?

cafebabel.com: Draw us a picture.
