Estonia to participate in the Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank

Representatives of Eesti Pank and the Ministry of Finance participate in the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) and the Development Committee of the World Bank held in Washington on October 11-13.

The main topics of the meeting are the situation of the global economy and financial markets and the surveillance activities of the IMF.From Estonia's point of view, one of the most important issues treated at the meeting is the analysis of the IMF's recent years' surveillance activities and policy advice. Among other things also the lending policy of the IMF, the impact of rising food and oil prices on the economy of the member countries and the role of the IMF in less developed countries are treated. The meeting of the World Bank Development Committee includes discussions of the global economic situation and its impact on the countries receiving financial and technical assistance from the World Bank, climate change related problems that developing countries face and the issue of the suffrage and representation of developing countries' representatives in the World Bank Board. Estonia's representatives at the annual meeting are the Minister of Finance , Governor of Eesti Pank , Deputy Governor of Eesti Pank , as well as experts from both Eesti Pank and the Ministry of Finance.

The Minister of Finance Ivari Padar will participate in various meetings concerning the economic situation and cooperation between Estonia and the World Bank. In addition, the Minister will give a speech on behalf of the Nordic and Baltic countries at a plenary meeting. The representatives of Eesti Pank will also meet representatives of the IMF and the US Department of the Treasury to discuss the situation and outlooks of the Estonian economy. The IMFC is an advisory body supervising the development of the international monetary and financial system. The IMFC meetings take place biannually and are attended by, in addition to the committee's own members, representatives from the IMF member countries and international organisations.
