Emily Atef wins Grand Prix in São Paulo

Last Thursday saw the 32nd São Paulo International Film Festival come to an end with a double success for The Stranger in Me [making of]. Director Emily Atef won the prize for the Best Film and the prize for Best Actress went to Susanne Wolff.

Wim Wenders, the festival's guest of honour, was presented with the Humanity Award.

German films were not only in large numbers in the competition, but also in the festival's other sections. Altogether, the festival showed 29 German films and co-productions.

The New Directors competition featured Tom Schreiber’s Dr. Alemán [trailer], Jovan Arsenic’s Heroes From the Neighbourhood, Marc Malze’s Monogamy for Beginners, Alejandro Cardenas Amelio’s Berlin-Buenos Aires, The Stranger in Me, Christian Klandt’s City of the World, Ulrike Grothe’s What If Death Do Us Apart? as well as Sergei Dvortsevoy’s co-production Tulpan (Germany/Kazakhstan/Russia/Poland).

The Perspective section presented 13 German productions: Veit Helmer’s Absurdistan, Doris Doerrie’s Cherry Blossoms – Hanami [trailer], Andreas Dresen’s Cloud Nine, Carsten Maaz’s Maui Boyz, Martin Walz’s Melodies of Spring [trailer], Vanessa Jopp’s Messy Christmas, Niko von Glasow’s Nobody’s Perfect, Dorothee Wenner’s Peace Mission, Reverse Shot by Dominik Wessely and Laurens Straub, Niels Laupert’s Seven Days Sunday, and Niels Bolbrinker’s Nature Before Us (Germany/Iceland/Lithuania), Andreas Pichler’s The Way of a Warrior (Germany/Switzerland/Italy) and Doendue Kilic’s The Other Side of Istanbul (Germany/Turkey).

Saschko Frey’s Echoes, Ismail Sahin’s Hakim, The Black Rose or How Mr. Fossenrath Tried Not To Change the World by Mario A. Conte and Simone Wendel and Colm Quinn’s The Discreet Charm of the Refugee (Germany/Ireland) could be seen in Short Films.

Special Screenings were held of Fassbinder’s Berlin Alexanderplatz , Marcel When’s One Who Set Forth: Wim Wenders' Early Years, Wim Wenders’ Palermo Shooting and Valerie by Birgit Moeller.
